Playwright Karen Righter

On June 12th at 7:00pm, Ohio Playwrights Circle, in association with The Human Race Theatre Company, will present a new script reading of The Day after Epiphany by Dayton playwright Karen Righter. The play takes place on January 6, 754 AD, as Pope Stephen II crosses the Alps to convince King Pepin to take up arms to save Rome. Unbeknownst to Pope Stephen, Pepin has his own problems with a marriage on the rocks and a rebellious daughter in this fictional telling of an actual historic encounter.

The Human Race Theatre highlights its commitment to the development of new theatre with new play readings. This free reading will take place at The Loft Theatre located at 126 N. Main Street in downtown Dayton. The reading is open to the public and audiences are invited to stay afterward for a post-performance discussion with the playwright.

Call for New Scripts

In Readings Info on April 3, 2012 at 6:18 pm

The Ohio Playwrights Circle is calling for new scripts from playwrights from across Ohio for the New Works Reading Series.

The New Works Reading Series will hold its first public reading on May 23, 2012 at 7pm Caryl D. Philips Creativity Center in Dayton, Ohio.   The primary focus of this experience is to give the playwright an opportunity to hear their work read out loud, an important part of the development of new plays.  Readings may be cold or they may be prepared.  This will depend on the situation with a given writer and their script.  Future readings will take place one each month.  For questions email us at: ohioplaywrightscircle@gmail.com

Our Guidelines:

Playwrights:

  • Any Ohio Playwright may participate.  Writers may be beginners or may have extensive credits.  All are encouraged to participate.  Writers must be over 18 years of age or have written permission from a parent / guardian.  Inevitably the subject matter at some new play readings involves adult language and subject matter.
  •  If you are a non-Ohio playwright please contact the OPC Director for a spot as a guest.  There may sometime be room in the schedule and who knows …. maybe you’ll move here.
  •  Plays may be one act or full length, drama, comedy, farce, etc.
  •  We will be reading play scripts not Screenplays.  If you want to have your screenplay heard, contact the OPC Director and we can see what’s possible.  It will be an exception.  But we all need a little adventure now and then.
  •  If you have a musical you want on the schedule, that’s great.  Just know that it may take some special arrangements to give you the best reading of your work.
  •  The reading sessions will hopefully occur once each month depending on space.
  •  During the year we will give preference to Ohio Members of the Dramatist Guild, (The Professional Association of Playwrights.)
  •  Writers should submit their script prior to the scheduled reading date for programming.  This is important so that those of us listening along with the playwrights are not subject to a whole evening of wrist-slashing drama, non-stop farce, or why I can’t get a date.  We will try to mix it up and balance a laugh or two with the blood-letting.
  •  Each script must be submitted in a traditional stage script format.  A sample format can be downloaded from our FB page as a PDF.  Each script should have a brief, (no more than one page), synopsis of the play included with the submission.
  • You may submit the script by sending a copy as a PDF to: ohioplaywrightscircle@gmail.com.

Actors:

  • Actors over the age of 18 are welcome to participate as readers in this series.  If under the age of 18, a written release from a parent or guardian is required.  Inevitably the subject matter at new play readings involves adult language and subject matter.
  •  You may be asked to read a script cold or you may participate in a prepared reading with a director and the playwright.
  •  Casting sessions will happen before the evening’s reading or after the Talk-back session, depending on the needs of the situation.
  •  Be adventurous, this can be a great place to meet new actors, directors and writers.
  • Contact the OPC Director for current information on opportunities.  Email at ohioplaywrightscircle@gmail.com.   Please make sure to give us all of your contact information, address, phone etc.

Directors:

  • Directors are encouraged to participate and to help guide a cast for a prepared reading.  Not every playwright will want a prepared reading.  They may want to see what they can learn from a cold reading.  There certainly are advantages.
  • However, there are also great advantages to a prepared reading and to a staged reading.  Where we have a playwright who wants a prepared reading, we strongly encourage them to work with a director who may help them learn even more about their work.  Matching up directors and scripts will be an informal process.
  • Contact the OPC Director for current information on opportunities.  Email us at ohioplaywrightscircle@gmail.com
