2014-2015 Classes at HRTC

In Class Info, General Update on August 16, 2014 at 3:36 pm

We have completed the schedule for the 2014-2015 Playwrighting classes.  Class size will continue to be limited and we have a new location.

Playwrighting – Level I

Saturday Mornings from 10am – 1pm
September 6, 13,20,27; October 4, 11, 18,25
Instructor: Michael M. London
This class is designed to take the mystery out of playwrighting and provide an introduction to new playwrights. The method of building a play is explored through a variety of exercises. Our focus will be on understanding the tools in basic dramatic structure. The process involves a lot of scene writing, a lot of thinking, a lot of laughing and a lot of learning. Each playwright will have an opportunity to create a 10-minute play that will be presented in a public reading. The class is designed for novices and experienced playwrights, actors and directors alike. No playwrights are expected to begin the class with already completed work.

Playwrighting – Level II

Saturday Mornings from 10am – 1pm
February 7,14,21,28 & March 7,14,21,28
Instructor: Michael M. London

This class is a continuation of the learning in Level I. Although we will still be looking closely at the dramatic structure of the story, we will also focus attention on other aspects of storytelling and the building of a play. There will be a lot of writing, a lot of thinking, some mutual support from other playwrights, a fair amount of laughing, some tasty food at breaks, and a general atmosphere of fun and learning. Each playwright will have a goal of completing a short one-act play that will be presented in a public reading. Playwrights will have the opportunity to hear their work read aloud by actors and prepared by directors. Prerequisite: Playwrighting – Level I.

Classes will be held at:

The Metropolitan Arts Center
Burnell Roberts Room
126 North Main Street, Dayton, OH 45402

The classes will be in the Metropolitan Arts Center between the Victoria Theatre and Uno Chicago Grill. Use the Loft Theatre entrance next to the Victoria Theatre.  Please buzz the Burnell-Roberts Room to be let in, and then make your way down the long hallway past the drinking fountain to the Burnell-Roberts Room on the left side.

Luke Williams at the Actors Gym

Reading for the OPC Playwrighting Classes is like an evening at the “Actor’s Gym”. That’s what the OPC actors have decided to call it. You arrive at 3:30pm, you are immediately cast and given a script, a few minutes of coaching from a director and you are onstage reading by 5:00pm.
A blue-collar acting exercise………………… just git ‘er done.

Hello World!

In General Update on March 12, 2012 at 6:24 pm

Welcome to the Ohio Playwrights Circle.  Today we begin.

I’m Michael London and I am starting the ball rolling on this effort.  I am a writer living in Ohio and a member of the Dramatists Guild.  Finding places to study, practice  and learn playwrighting in this area is challenging.   That reality is what brought me to conceive of this project.

I have had this on my mind for some time.  Colleagues in the Guild encouraged me to move forward with it when we met this past June in Washington, D.C..  So with the help and encouragement of friends and colleagues, I’m ‘getting off my butt’ to make it happen.

The idea for this project is simple.  Make classes  & workshops available for playwrights to study.  Make opportunities for playwrights to hear their work read.  Create opportunities for writers to learn from others in the storytelling business.  Create networking opportunities for playwrights to know each other.  And lastly, create opportunities for writers to work with another writer.

It won’t all happen at once.  We’ll do a bit at a time and let it grow. We are beginning with classes and readings and public conversations.  An annual retreat and the Writers Circle will come in time.

We are starting in Dayton, Ohio and we may move out to other parts of Ohio over time.  Different communities have different needs.  In Cincinnati, the Cincinnati Playwrights Initiative provides opportunities for the readings of members work.  So there is probably no need for us to help coordinate anything there.  However, if we can offer a service we’ll be open to extending our efforts to help.  The same goes with other communities.  We’ll find a host for other activities in different places as needed.  I say we because I won’t be doing this alone.  Others are already volunteering to help.

I’m very pleased at the generous invitation of the Human Race Theatre Company in Dayton, to use their space for our activities.  They are hosting our first class, our first readings, and our first conversations in storytelling.  They are such kind professionals to work with and have a commitment to creating new work in the theatre.  Many thanks to them.

We’ll use this blog site as a primary source for information on activities but we’ll try our best to find as many other ways to share the updates on what’s happening next.  You can find us on Facebook also.  I’ll try to keep expanding the information and the opportunities as often as possible.

Today is just step one.

Keep writing & Be well,
