Weekly Writing Prompts

In Class Info on February 17, 2013 at 5:26 am

Each week we will offer a writing prompt on our Facebook page.

These prompts are for playwrights that are looking to have a bit of writing exercise.  Or maybe to get started on something different and new.  Or just to get them started writing anything.  They’re purpose is no different than writing prompts that may be used in any writing class.

There are three different prompt styles that we will use.

  • An Image Prompt – one that just gives you an image in your mind and you take it from there.
  • A Dialogue Prompt – one that gives you the first few lines of dialogue and you take it from there.
  • A Combo Prompt – one that gives you a little of image and dialogue.

Here are a few examples:

1.        It is late at night.
We are looking at the front of a large Gothic Style Church.
There is a single light on the side of the church that lights the steps in front.  In that light we see an elderly woman dressed in a full white gown.  She is holding a bran muffin and speaking to a clown.
What do they say?

2.      Character #1:  Where’ve you been?

Character #2:  Don’t Start.

Character #1:  Well?

Character #2:  What?

Character #1:  Did you get it?

3.       The lights fade up on a small part of the stage and we see two individuals sitting on a platform with their legs dangling of the edge.  They are sitting on the edge of a dock.
They sit in quiet for a time until we hear; “How do we know if we are born?
